AI cannot reference what it cannot reliably discover and understand.
No guaranteed citations, AI mentions or AI Overview inclusion. What improves is how discoverable, clear and evidence-backed your information is.
What AEO and GEO actually mean
Different labels. One connected search ecosystem.
Traditional search hands users links. Answer-driven search increasingly hands them an answer, a recommendation, a comparison — and a list of sources.
Answer Engine Optimization
Making information clear and extractable for answer-driven experiences.
Generative Engine Optimization
Being eligible to be discovered, grounded and referenced in generative answers.
The load-bearing part
SEO foundation
AEO and GEO sit on top of SEO — they do not replace it. Google's current position is that normal SEO fundamentals remain foundational for its generative Search features.

[02 TRADITIONAL VS AI SEARCH] · [03 AEO / GEO / SEO MODEL]
What this page will not sell youNo "secret GEO schema", no "AI ranking tags", no LLM keyword stuffing, and no llms.txt requirement — Google states it does not use llms.txt for Search visibility. Search crawling and model-training controls are also different things, and we keep them separate. For ChatGPT Search eligibility we check that OAI-SearchBot is not unintentionally blocked; that makes a site eligible, never guaranteed to be cited.
Why this matters most right now
Customers aren't just searching anymore. They're asking AI what to choose.
A few years ago the journey was straightforward. Someone searched, Google showed a list, and the customer opened several pages and decided whom to contact. That journey still exists — but the same customer may now ask something an answer engine has to research before it can reply.
What they used to type
"Best LMS development company"
Ten links. The customer does the comparing.
What they ask now
"Which type of LMS is better for a university with 3,000 students, online examinations and ERP integration?"
"Which company can build an AI-powered LMS and also handle migration from Moodle?"
The system researches the question, retrieves from multiple sources and answers. Your business may be evaluated before the customer reaches your website.
The journey we used to design for
Five steps, and the website sat in the middle of all of them.
The journey emerging alongside it
By the time the website is opened, the shortlist may already exist. [02 OLD SEARCH VS AI SEARCH]
This changes where brands compete for attention. Your website is still essential — but increasingly it also acts as a source used to explain your company, compare your service or support an answer someone else's system generated.
Before, we asked
"Can I rank?"
Now also ask
"Does the internet clearly understand what we do?"
Now also ask
"Do we answer real customer questions?"
Now also ask
"Can our expertise be verified?"
Now also ask
"Do we have content worth referencing?"
Search is becoming a decision, not a list
A question like "best LMS for 3,000 concurrent students with an existing ERP" is not a keyword. It is a brief — and it gets answered before anyone clicks.
Zero-click is not the same as zero-value
A citation can shape a shortlist without producing a visit. That is why we measure citations and referrals separately, and never treat one as the other.
Commodity content just got cheap
Anything a model can already summarise is no longer a differentiator. First-hand evidence, original data and real project experience are what remain hard to replace.
Don't chase AI mentions.
Become a better source.
Search has evolved
SEO is not dead. But ranking alone is no longer the whole strategy.
Good technical SEO, crawlability, site structure, authority and useful content remain essential. What changed is the search experience built around them.
Old SEO mindset
"What keyword do I rank for?"
Where it led: keyword-heavy pages, generic blogs, volume chasing, repeated location pages, thin listicles, light rewrites of competitors.
Modern search strategy
"What does the user actually need to know or decide?"
Old search approach
Optimise the pageModern search
Optimise the understandingWhat is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization
Making important information easier to understand and extract when users ask direct questions. The objective is clarity — not stuffing dozens of questions onto a page.
Weak page
"How much does a custom mobile app cost?" — answered after twenty paragraphs of marketing introduction.

What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization
Work aimed at making content more useful and discoverable when generative systems build answers from multiple sources. It is not a magic replacement for SEO.
It builds on
Then adds focus on
Foundations still matter
That combination is the modern strategy. Not one replacing another.
What do we mean by AI search?
Four surfaces. Four different ways of retrieving and presenting the same information.
There is no single "AI ranking algorithm"Each platform retrieves and presents differently, so there is nothing universal to optimise against. That is exactly why we work on strong information, technical discoverability and measurable evidence rather than short-lived hacks.
The Filari AI search framework
Better visibility starts with better information architecture.
We do not begin by rewriting every page "for AI". We first understand how your business is currently represented across search, your website and the wider web — then strengthen what makes it easier for search and AI systems to retrieve accurate, useful information.
What we review

[13 AI DISCOVERY AUDIT] · ten stages, one connected pipeline
AEO and GEO are not content writing.
They are a connected discovery system.
Break any one stage and the ones after it stop. That is why we audit before we write.
The business case
Search visibility is expanding beyond the clickable ranking.
Traditional search still matters enormously. The opportunity is not to abandon SEO — it is to be prepared for both search results and AI-generated discovery.
More ways to be discovered
Your expertise can surface across search results, AI-generated answers, comparison queries, research questions, local search and image or video search.
Make the business easier to understand
Clear entity architecture removes ambiguity about who you are, what you offer, who you serve and where you operate.
Show up around the real buying question
AI searches are detailed. Instead of "LMS company", a buyer asks about 3,000 concurrent students and an existing ERP. Detailed content lets you join that conversation.
Build knowledge once, use it everywhere
A strong comparison, case study, research report, decision guide, FAQ or cost guide works across SEO, AI search, sales, email, LinkedIn, proposals and WhatsApp.
Become a source, not another summary
Original research, first-hand experience, evidence and expert commentary strengthen human trust and machine understanding at the same time.
Build for change, not one update
A foundation of useful information, clear entities, technical accessibility, evidence and authority outlasts any single algorithm shift.

AEO / GEO explained simply
Questions businesses are asking about AI search.
Sixteen answers — including the ones where the honest answer is "no".
01What is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It focuses on making information clearer and more useful for search experiences that provide direct answers rather than only a list of web pages.
02What is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is commonly used to describe strategies aimed at improving how information can be discovered, understood and potentially referenced by generative AI search experiences.
03Is AEO/GEO replacing SEO?
No. Strong SEO remains the foundation — technical accessibility, indexing, quality content, authority and user experience continue to matter. AEO and GEO add greater focus on answers, entities, evidence, citations and generative-search visibility.
04Is traditional SEO dead?
No. What is becoming less effective is low-value SEO built around keyword stuffing, generic content, mass-produced pages and ranking tricks. Good SEO is still fundamental to modern search.
05Can Filari guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my company?
No. No provider can responsibly guarantee that a specific AI system will mention, cite or recommend a business.
06Can my website appear in ChatGPT Search?
Public websites can be surfaced there. For content intended to be discoverable, make sure you are not unintentionally blocking OpenAI’s search crawler. Eligibility does not guarantee citation.
07Do I need a special AI schema?
No universal "AEO schema" or "GEO schema" exists. Normal valid structured data remains useful where appropriate, but it is not a guaranteed AI citation mechanism.
08Do I need llms.txt?
Not for Google Search visibility. Google currently states that it does not use llms.txt for ranking or generative-search visibility. Other systems may evolve differently, so crawler and protocol requirements should be reviewed individually.
09Should we rewrite every page for AI?
No. Content should remain primarily useful for people. The better approach is usually to improve clarity, evidence, expertise, structure and factual completeness.
10What type of content is most useful?
Original research, first-hand expertise, detailed case studies, useful comparisons, specific service information, decision guides, verified data, technical documentation, expert commentary and current information.
11Can AI-written content work?
AI can assist with research, outlining, drafting and repurposing. But mass-producing generic pages without adding genuine value is not a strong long-term strategy — expert review, originality, accuracy and usefulness still matter.
12How do you measure AI visibility?
Depending on platform and website: Google generative-search visibility data, Bing AI citations and cited pages, AI grounding topics, ChatGPT referral traffic, brand mention monitoring, cited-page monitoring and conversions from AI referrals. Capabilities vary between platforms.
13Does an AI citation guarantee traffic?
No. A citation means the content was referenced. The user may or may not visit the source — which is why we report citations and referrals as separate numbers.
14How long does AEO/GEO take?
There is no universal timeline. It depends on existing authority, content quality, technical health, competition, brand recognition and how frequently relevant questions arise.
15Should a small business invest in AEO/GEO?
It depends on the foundation. For many smaller businesses a strong website, SEO and local SEO should come first. AEO and GEO become especially useful once those fundamentals exist and the business wants stronger authority across emerging AI-driven discovery channels.
16Can Filari handle SEO and AEO/GEO together?
Yes, and in many cases that is the preferred approach — AI-search visibility should be built on top of a strong SEO and website foundation rather than treated as an isolated marketing tactic.
Build information worth finding
If AI is answering your customer's question,
give it better information to find.
Your business already has knowledge. Your team has experience. Your projects contain lessons. Your customers ask questions. Your website contains information. The opportunity is to organise those things into something search engines, AI systems and — most importantly — customers can understand and trust.
We review how your business currently appears across traditional and AI-powered search, identify gaps in the technical foundation, content, business identity and evidence, and build a practical roadmap.
Be found. Be understood.
Become a better source.
